With all the R&D that goes into the new Gen super sportbikes, you think Yamaha would go to the extreme and do a little more research into the competition. I think somewhere along the line, sombody screw up. Take a look at the Dyno charts with a full Akrapovic System. If the numbers pulled from Akrapovic’s site are correct (and I don’t see why they wouldn’t), then Yamaha has fallen way off the mark with this all new R1. The point of the new cross-plane crankshaft was for a more linear powerband. This torque curve looks a mess.

With Yamaha riders like Brewmyster and Cnote, its going to be another year with a machine that cannot produce compare to its other competition in its class. I, myself, was looking forward to the New R1’s being a beast like its 04 predicessor. Someone over on GDC pulled some more info from their site and did a couple overlays. Doesn’t look very flattering for the new R1 at all.
These graphs are all with full Akrapovic systems fitted….you be the judge.

For the average Rider, its almost always based upon the look of the machine from the moment they see it. But to a Supreme Ryder, we know better. Performance is first, ridibility, ergos(body and postioning), and The cosmetic looks of the machine is set for last.

Here is a couple of details for the next Generation:

“In Ama Pro Racing, World Superbike And MotoGP there’s been a shift in riding styles. From the days of ’80s and ’90s heroes like Kevin Schwantz and Mick Doohan who were forced to wrestle powerful, unruly beasts to their will, a younger generation of riders typified by Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner took over, rising from the high-corner speed ranks of 125cc and 250cc Grand Prix machinery to the more refined, better-behaved MotoGP bikes of today with their complex engine-management software and traction control. Actually Rossi’s career dates from the final days of fire-breathing 500cc two-strokes (he won the last 500CC World Championship in 2001, then piled up consecutive MotoGP championships from 2002 to 2005), which likely contributes to making him the most versatile and perhaps most talented roadracer of all time.

Focusing on riding styles, in particular body position while hanging off during cornering, we see the evolution from the more upright chest-over-the-tank style of the past couple of decades to the radically to-the-inside and almost under-the-bike shenanigans of the youngsters. The old school still has some fight left, as exemplified by former World Superbike champions Troy Bayliss (a dominant force in the series and currently leading WSBK points) and Neil Hodgson, one of our interview subjects here, who makes his return to AMA Superbike competition to take care of some unfinished business. Representing the new-schoolers is multitime AMA champion and factory Yamaha superbike pilot Eric Bostrom, a man who first popularized the modern style in the AMA competition despite his dirt-track and four-stroke background. When asked if the difference in riding styles comes from the younger generation’s experience being limited to modern chassis and tire technology, Hodgson scratches his head and says, “Yeah, it’s very possible; I’ve never analyzed it that way, but now that you’ve said it you’re probably right.”

My riding style , varies on so many differnt levels, and it seem to me its like a fingerprint. Its different for each and every rider. I perfer to fight my machine into a turn, positioning my body more off the bike, to keep it as upright as possible and to maintain a comfortable speed. Its a style that I’m most comfortable with. I’ve practice the low rider, tank hugger technique, but its not the same. You can find more of this article on http://www.sportrider.com/ride/RSS/146_0806_riding_styles_body_position/eric_bostrom.html.

The lower and farther off to the inside the rider gets his body, the more upright the bike is around a given radius at a given speed. Pure and simple, more is better, so long as your body position doesn’t compromise your ability to stay connected to the bike so you can feel what’s happening at both contact patches and maintain light and precise inputs on the controls. Since the days of rigid frames and spoked wheels, riding styles are constantly changing. Bike and tire technology, like time, marches forward and waits for no man-not even Schwantz or Doohan.”

The machine, designated S1000RR, marks an entirely new model series for BMW, according to the company’s Motorcycle Director Hendrik von Kuenheim.” He declined to give too many technical details other than hints about the machine, but the pictures speak for themselves: twin-spar chassis, four-cylinder engine, chain drive and conventional front suspension instead of the usual BMW fare of shaft drive and Telelever front end. But it will still bristle with innovations like traction control and a “special feature” in the cylinder head that could help deliver competitive horsepower.

BMW will build just 1000 road-legal units of the RR before the January, 2010, World Superbike homologation deadline. Pricing has yet to be announced, but don’t expect it to be cheap; the limited-production HP2 Sport—which had some success at the Daytona 200 last month—retails for $25,375. However, BMW does acknowledge it needs to keep pricing somewhat reasonable, despite currency disparities that make it difficult for European brands to compete with American and Asian factories, so under $20,000 for a mass-produced version might not be unimaginable.

The company’s goal for its first year of World Superbike racing is modest: get in the top 10. The following year it hopes to get some Bavarian boots on the podium, and in the long term there are dreams of winning the championship.

Why compete in World Superbike? BMW has saturated the markets it concentrates on—touring and heavy enduro models—and hopes to get a large enough taste of the 100,000-unit-per-year worldwide Open-class sportbike market to bump company global sales to over 150,000 units annually. With the recent purchase of Husqvarna, BMW could realize this goal, especially if von Kuenheim’s promise of even more exciting models in the pipeline proves true.

I’ve heard a lot about BMW and its seems that they are steping up . But until I can see or experience a BMW 1000RR run down or surpass the performance of a Gsxr-1000r, I’ll stay on this side of the track.
